If you're expecting a baby soon then you have a million decisions to make. In fact I'm sure your head is spinning already. And one of those decisions, possibly one of the more important ones, is what you will do for your baby's sleeping arrangements. Will you be buying a cradle, bassinet or crib?
I'm sure you know the difference between a crib and a cradle or a bassinet. But you may not be so familiar with the differences between a bassinet and cradle.
Baby Cradle Mattress
As a general rule a cradle is larger than a bassinet, and often less portable. Cradles are generally made of wood or some other form of solid material and usually come with a range of different functions. For example rocking cradles are quite popular. Rocking cradles are specifically designed with a mechanism that allows you to rock the cradle so that the comforting movement will help your baby to sleep.
And rocking cradles can be designed so that the rocking motion can be imparted in several different ways.
A bassinet on the other hand is often smaller and a bit more portable than a cradle, often a bassinet is sufficiently portable that it can be taken with you when you're out visiting so that your baby has somewhere to sleep at any time. Generally a bassinet remains fixed and you are not able to impart any rocking motion to it.
Bassinets can be made from a range of different materials including softer materials such as wicker.
Generally a bassinet is small enough that it is only useful for the first 4 to 6 months of your baby's life, and after that your baby will be too big or too heavy for you to use a bassinet. Cradles are also used only for the first 5 or 6 months of life.
Regardless of whether you choose a cradle or bassinet either should confirm to regular safety standards which apply to all forms of baby beds.
Of course a crib is quite different to either a bassinet or cradle. It is bigger, heavier and less portable and is generally intended to be left in the nursery rather than to be placed in the bedroom with the parents. It is more expensive but a crib can be used for a number of years of the baby's life.
The choice is yours. Whether it is a cradle or a bassinet both are a lovely way to start your baby sleeping. But these will only last for a short period of time until you need to put them aside and buy a crib anyway.
There are no rights or wrongs. It's simply a matter of personal decision, whatever works for you. But whether you buy a baby crib or bassinet or cradle, enjoy your baby.
